Do you have a small or large backyard? Are you thinking about sprucing out your porch or patio? Well, container gardening is one of the best ways to keep your garden looking beautiful, regardless of the space. Try these container gardening tips for the best results.

Proper Drainage

Your container plants will thrive or die depending on the drainage system in place. If there isn’t proper drainage, the soil will become very wet causing rotting of the roots and eventual death of your plants.

You will find that most of the planters or pots sold in gardening stores don’t have enough drainage, so you need to carve holes by punching or drilling into them.

Proper Lighting

It’s quite easy to overestimate the amount of light your containers are getting. There’s a great plant for any type of lighting but it’s prudent to determine the amount of lighting available before choosing plants for your containers.

Start by placing the plant anywhere in your backyard or patio and find out how long it takes for the natural light to hit it.

Proper Feeding

The soil in potted plants doesn’t have the best nutrients for your plants to thrive so you need to add them. You can add fertilizer such as compost or mulch to make sure your container plants get the best nutrients to grow healthy.

The Best Plants

Before you rush into the gardening store and make an impulse purchase, you should make a list of the plants you need for your garden. Of course, you need to do a lot of research on the best plants to survive in your region. Find out more about the climate to make sure the plants you choose will thrive successfully.

Proper Mixing Of Plants

If you’re adding plants to your container, make sure they are a perfect match for each other. For instance, the various types of plants found in one pot should require the same amount of moisture and light. If you combine plants with varying needs, most of them will die.

Proper Maintenance

Keep in mind that plants will die, regardless of how much water or nutrients you add to the container. That’s why you need to keep up the maintenance protocols.

For instance, when you’re watering plants, always check for the dead ones and remove them from the planters. You can choose to repot the plants as often as possible to introduce them to new soil for the best results.

Proper Potting Soil

Yes, you might choose to fill the containers with different types of junk to improve the health of your plants. You can try out packing peanuts or milk jugs but one disadvantage is that it will dry out a lot faster. That’s why you need to choose the best potting soil for your containers. Use a lot of it to create a good margin for error when it comes to nutrients and water.

Keep in mind that as a new gardener, you’re bound to make a lot of mistakes. However with a lot of research, your plants will eventually thrive in their containers.
